Lightning Shutdown Procedure
1.3m McGraw-Hill Telescope
(DO NOT TURN OFF
SWITCH and 2 SMALL UPS units)
Last updated 2013July01
NOTE: IF THERE IS NO OBSERVER AT THE 2.4M TELESCOPE, THE 1.3M
OBSERVER
IS RESPONSIBLE FOR A LIGHTNING SHUTDOWN AT THAT TELESCOPE ALSO.
Walk through these procedures at the beginning of your run. If you have
any questions about how they work, please ask. After hours call
or email Eric. Lightning is a
serious concern. In an emergency do not hesitate to call anytime.
1. Stow the Telescope
If observing, follow the new TCS closing procedure. Stow the telescope
at zenith,
close the instrument hatch and mirror cover. Then close the
dome.
2. Shut Down Computers
- If using CCDS, TIFKAM, B4K or R4K, bring down the IC computer by quitting Prospero then quitting out of the data-taking program ("quit" command at the Raritan keyboard), then turning off the PC power when you get the DOS prompt.
- If using Modspec, MKIII, Templeton, Nellie, or Echelle, quit the Owl software then power off mdmarc2 by using the "Shutdown" prompt on the Raritan.
- If using etna (MDM8K), login to the console as user "shutdown", password "haltsystem", and it will turn itself off.
- Power off the Linux workstation McGraw by logging in as a regular user and typing "shutdown". Answer "y" when prompted. Do not power down Hill as it is on it's own devoted UPS.
- Windows
Vista computers for guiding, slit viewing (IF USED), and Andor direct observations are powered off
from the startup menu, at the bottom-left of the screen. Click on
the small Windows logo and go to the right side of the menu to bring up
the sub-menu for shutting down.
3. TCS Power:
Leave the TCS on, along with hill as they are on their own small UPS.
4. MIS Controller:
5. DO NOT Turn Off UPS Breakers:
TO RESTART DO EVERYTHING IN REVERSE ORDER
Remember to turn mcgraw back
on. The power switches are on the front panel. Check the instrument and
telescope for correct operation.
If using an MDM CCD, 4K or TIFKAM take test exposures to be sure
the systems are operating properly.
Make
sure to power up the Windows Vista guider and if used, the slit
viewing computer via the power switches on the front of each computer.
