MDM Observatory 2.4m Telescope Observer's Report for 2008 Feb 28 Observer(s): John Thorstensen Institution(s): Dartmouth Instrument: Modspec + Echelle CCD Worked for 11 hours (all night) Conditions were Non-Photometric most of the night. No equipment or software problems were encountered. Seeing and Weather: Beg: Seeing 1.5 arcsec, Cirrus, Winds Light & Variable Mid: Seeing 1 arcsec, Cirrus, Winds Light & Variable End: Seeing 1 arcsec, Cirrus, Winds Light & Variable Observing Summary: Seeing was good, but it was cirrussy to varying degrees pretty much all night long. This didn't cause any trouble, but the telescope did some singing last night, rarely and intermittently giving off high-pitched (maybe 1 kHz?) loud sounds. Sometimes this happened while tracking, other times when slewing. The pitch sounds consistent and exactly constant. It sounds like a pure sinusoid -- no discernible tone color. It's so rare that it would be very difficult to diagnose, so it's probably not worth trying to track itdown right now ... ------------------------------ Submitted on 2008 Feb 29 [6:44:53]
