MDM Observatory 2.4m Telescope Observing Report for 2010 Nov 10 Observer(s): Haojing Yan Institution(s): OSU Instrument: OSMOS Worked for 7 hours (most of the night) Conditions were Non-Photometric most of the night. Problems were encountered, see the separate trouble report for details. Seeing and Weather: Beg: Seeing 0.9 arcsec, Clear, Winds Calm Mid: Seeing 1.3 arcsec, Clear, Winds Calm End: Seeing 1.5 arcsec, Clear, Winds Calm Observing Summary: The night was quite clear, but not likely photometric. All went well until the observer began to do deep imaging exposures at around 9:30pm. The same focusing problem that the observer encountered in the past few nights came again. After struggling with it for two more hours, the observer decided to switch to a backup program that does not require very good imaging quality till the end of the time slot assigned to this deep imaging program. In the rest of the night, only the spectroscopic programs and that backup program were executed. The three hours spent on the focusing problem might not be totally worthless. The observer believes that the source of the problem has been located. See the trouble report for details. The instrument (OSMOS) itself worked very well. With the helpful tips from John Thorstensen, the slit acquisition efficiency has improved by a factor of 3~4, and the imaging dithering efficiency has also been significantly improved. All what we need is to let every observer aware of the most efficent way of operating this instrument. ------------------------------ Submitted on 2010 Nov 11 [7:14:56]
