MDM Observatory 2.4m Telescope Observing Report for 2011 Feb 26 Observer(s): Kathryn Kreckel Institution(s): Columbia Instrument: CCDS No Observing (see comments below) Bad weather most of the night. No equipment or software problems were encountered. Seeing and Weather: Very bad weather all night. Observing Summary: Due to thick clouds at sunset, high winds and eventual snow I didn't manage any science observing tonight. As a follow-up to the problems I've encountered with focusing the 1800 grooves per mm grating, I did observe a bright star right at twilight, and found that if I set the collimator focus to 1167 [700] then the focus on the acquisitions camera and in the spatial direction of the spectra agree fairly well, but the focus in the spectral direction is off. I need a collimator focus of about 30 [418] to get spectral focus in lamp lines, but then a star focused for the acquisitions camera is out of focus in the spatial direction of the spectrograph. As far as I understand, this astigmatism in the image suggests that the problem is in the spectrograph and possibly tied to the grating? There is a lot of snow out there, I hope I can find/construct a sled! ------------------------------ Submitted on 2011 Feb 27 [6:16:00]
