MDM Observatory 2.4m Telescope Observing Report for 2013 Apr 11 Observer(s): Dan Gifford Institution(s): University of Michigan Instrument: OSMOS Worked for 5 hours (first half of the night) Conditions were Mixed most of the night. Problems were encountered, see the separate trouble report for details. Seeing and Weather: Clouds from 01:00 until 06:00. Beg: Clear, Winds Calm Mid: Cirrus, Winds Calm End: Overcast, Winds Calm Observing Summary: After observing one object I slewed to another that was located in the north. The red OSMOS instrument package rotated against the soft air tubes leading to the mirror near the fork and I started receiving warnings that the instrument electronics are not responding. I manually slewed the telescope to free the instrument, then tried startup, etc in prospero but no luck. I decided to follow the IC reboot instructions and power cycling the OSMOS HE and IE boxes. I was able to do so successfully after much searching through the manuals. The procedure is documented but not clearly for a first time user. It is not obvious what things like the HE and IE are without extensive searching, as well as what the IC is and where it is located in the computer room (the monitor is easy to find but the box is not). Because of this confusion, I rebooted the machine that connects to the weather station instead of the IC at first since it is the closest PC to the IC monitor. It would be helpful to include in the manual that the IC PC is located in the right computer rack. This reboot and subsequent setup of the necessary applications on the workstation solved the problem that was caused by the movement. Unfortunately, by the time I solved this problem (2:00am), it had clouded over and I shut down shortly after. None of the masks need to be changed out, however the long slit in position 1 can be replaced with mask ID 584630. ------------------------------ Submitted on 2013 Apr 12 [3:42:10]
