MDM Observatory 2.4m Telescope Observing Report for 2014 Jul 02 Observer(s): Hainline, Carroll, Jones Institution(s): Dartmouth College Instrument: OSMOS Worked for 4 hours (part of the night) Conditions were Overcast most of the night. Problems were encountered, see the separate trouble report for details. Seeing and Weather: Clouds all night. Beg: Patchy Clouds, Winds Light & Variable Mid: Seeing 1.5 arcsec, Patchy Clouds, Winds Light & Variable End: Overcast, Winds Light & Variable Observing Summary: While the sky looked favorable early in the evening, right after twilight clouds rolled in and covered the sky. We watched a lightning storm brewing in the distant south, but it was never close enough to indicate that we should run the lightning shutdown. At around 11 PM, the clouds parted enough for us to risk opening up, and we were rewarded with 1.5'' seeing and so we collected some data on one of our targets, along with calibration data. Halfway through our second target, however, clouds once again rolled in, preventing us from observing. We remained hopeful, based on the fact that the guide star kept coming in and out, and so we kept the dome and telescope open and at the ready. Unfortunately, the clouds very quickly grew thicker, and we got a light rain which fell onto the telescope, which was open. We very quickly rushed to close the mirror cover and the dome, and closed up for the night following that, as by that time, twilight had arrived. ------------------------------ Submitted on 2014 Jul 3 [4:37:17]
