MDM Observatory 2.4m Telescope Observing Report for 2014 Jun 22 Observer(s): John Thorstensen Institution(s): Dartmouth Instrument: Modspec + Echelle Worked for 9 hours (all night) Conditions were Photometric most of the night. No equipment or software problems were encountered. Seeing and Weather: Beg: Seeing 1 arcsec, Clear, Winds Moderate Mid: Seeing <1 arcsec, Clear, Winds Light & Variable End: Seeing 1 arcsec, Clear, Winds Moderate Observing Summary: A very fine night, clear, dark, and with good seeing. A bit breezy at times. The apparent shutter problem from the end of last night did not recur. I ran a pointing test. When I was far north, something odd happened -- I inadvertently sent the telescope to around HA = 6 15, dec = +75 (or else it was to minus 6 15, I forget which now). Rather than refusing to set because the HA was over 6 h, it started going the other way -- driving the HA to the other side of the sky, through the meridian, and driving the dec north through the pole. It was apparently trying to get at the target under the pole! I hit the soft stop on xtcs, went out into the dome, and found the HA around an hour east and the dec at about 110 degrees. I backed it out with the handpaddle slew and kept going with the test. ------------------------------ Submitted on 2014 Jun 23 [5:16:30]
