MDM Observatory 2.4m Telescope Observing Report for 2018 Aug 30 Observer(s): Rupert Institution(s): MDM Instrument: OSMOS/B Worked for 11 hours (all night) Conditions were Non-Photometric most of the night. No equipment or software problems were encountered. Seeing and Weather: Beg: Seeing 1.8 arcsec, Clear, Winds Calm Mid: Seeing 1.6 arcsec, Clear, Winds Calm End: Seeing 1.6 arcsec, Clear, Winds Calm Observing Summary: Realized part way through the night that the headers of all the files over the past couple nights have been recorded wrong. Specifically, the IDs of the slit, both filters, and the disperser, while the position of these wheels was correctly recorded. I closed out of Prospero and reopened it and that seemed to do the trick. Had to go back and edit the headers. Couldn't really figure out why this happened in the first place, but it seems to be fine now. I also had trouble with a lack of signal when gathering spectra. At some point in the night (in the middle of a series of spectra of one object) it seems as though I lost the object, even though the telescope seemed to be tracking fine, and I hadn't made any changes to the exposure settings in between exposures. From this point on, there were several objects for which I would be aligned according to osctrtask, but I would get no signal. I even tried bumping up the exposure time significantly just to be sure I was getting the counts, but to no avail. I'll have to think on this further... No other software or mechanical issues. ------------------------------ Submitted on 2018 Aug 31 [5:00:36]
