MDM Trouble Report for 2001 Jan 2 Telescope: 2.4m Observer(s): C Gerardy (Dartmouth) Instrument: TIFKAM Problem(s) Encountered: Here's a description of our troubles with the TIFKAM computers this afternoon. The system is back up now and seems to be running fine. As we already noted in our observing log, we had a brief power outage this weekend. All of the 2.4m control systems were unaffected, except for the 2 TIFKAM computers (WC & IC). These were apparently just plugged into a normal wall outlet, and were not on the UPS system. Paul called as we were finishing our run last night, and I informed him of this.. (actually he already knew). Anyway he was going to move the computers over to UPS power today, so before going to bed, I shut them down. When I got up, Paul had moved the computers to UPS power, and had restarted them, but he hadn't set up anything on the sparc stations. So I tried to start caliban & prospero, and prospero wasn't happy. In particular the IE indicator was red. So I brought everything down and tried to reboot a couple of times. However, it wasn't coming back up. Fortunately Paul was talking to Dr. Pogge at the time, and with his help we eventually got the system back up. The solution apparently was to power cycle the electronics boxes on the instrument, and then re-booting the IC. This solved the IE problem. A subsequent disk synch problem between the WC and the IC was solved by restarting the WC. ------------------------------ Submitted on 2001 Jan 2 [20:07:35]
