MDM Trouble Report for 2002 May 21 Telescope: 2.4m Observer(s): Vestergaard (OSU) Instrument: CCDS Problem(s) Encountered: At midnight as I had started a `mgo 2' exposure, I noticed that the `CountDown: XXXX' showed XXX almost 25000 secs and that it was stalled. I aborted the exposure and found the head electronics wasn't responding. Tried closing shutter but couldn't. I tried clearing the link with `ic uartinit' but got the error message that the head electronics uart was disabled (-sequence -HE) on IC). I tried cycling the power on the HE box and running `ic seqinit' many, many times - at no avail. Couldn't find any fix or even suggestions in manual pages. Eventually I got it up - but not sure if it was a coincidence. I had left the HE power off for 10 minutes or more and with the power off I tried `seqinit' on IC - expecting it to complain that HE was down, but this time did it actually locate the HE uart instead of disabling it. HE and SEQUENCE came up. And they stayed up and ok after HE power was turned on. I restarted prospero (`startup'). It came up with the error that the IC and WC disks were not synched/syncronized. I then quit 1st IC, 2nd WC, started 1st IC, and 2nd WC. I then did `>ic req initdisk' on WC to get -UPSYNCH to +UPSYNCH. I restarted caliban (`quit' and `caliban'), and then did `startup' in prospero. It all worked then and continued to do so the rest of the night. Since there are no instructions (that I could find) about f.inst. what one can do (including NOT rebooting the PCs when only the HE is down, and how important it is that one quits (and enters) IC before WC ) it will be helpful to others (and my own rusty memory thereof from earlier runs) that such hints enters in the Prospero manual. Thanks! *smile* I will send Rick Pogge a file with some error messages, in case they are helpful. I recall Bob saying he also had problems with the Head Electronics at the startup of CCDS before my run. ------------------------------ Submitted on 2002 May 21 [17:21:04]
