MDM Trouble Report for 2002 Oct 27 Telescope: 2.4m Observer(s): John Thorstensen (Dartmouth) Instrument: modspec+echelle Problem(s) Encountered: The guider PC disk has started to whine loudly. This is a severe human factors issue when one has to sit right next to it and try to think straight for 13 hours at a stretch. I would like to put in a plea that _every effort_ be made to move the guider PC out of the control room. Because the weather is bad, I just now switched the guider PC off for noise abatement, and the difference is dramatic. With the DTI also turned off (the usual configuration for most people) it is nearly silent in here. Even if the disk were not making noise, the power-supply fans in the guider PC have been amazingly loud for a long time. Agung is outta here; let's finish the job. People will be absolutely delighted at how quiet it is, and fatigue levels and general irritability among observers will decline significantly. It would be fantastic if it were possible to move that PC on Monday, but if it were that easy I imagine it would already have been done. Even if it has to be jury-rigged somehow it would be greatly appreciated. If it can't be moved it's going to be a very long five nights sitting next to that thing. ------------------------------ Submitted on 2002 Oct 27 [2:50:34]
