MDM Trouble Report for 2003 Jan 27

Problem(s) Encountered:
Around midnight the telescope stopped being able to
guide in the E or W direction.  Neither the autoguider
nor the hand paddle could guide in the E-W direction,
although N-S guide motions were working, as were set
motions in all directions. Changing the hand paddle
(just because we had another one in the control room)
did not cure the problem.  Also, the telescope once
stopped tracking around the time this problem was noticed.
The tracking was cured by turning the tracking knob off and
on.  But since we still couldn't guide, we had to stop 
observing.  You can hear a noise when trying to guide,
but nothing happens.  Figured that this has something to do
with a clutch or brake adjustment.
This problem seems to have occurred before in the past
couple of months.  Will check previous trouble reports.
