MDM Trouble Report for 2003 Sep 27 Telescope: 1.3m Observer(s): Bentz (OSU) Instrument: Templeton Problem(s) Encountered: When I attempted to take biases earlier in the afternoon, I was given an error message: ccd_aread: wrong aio finished; expected 0. This is bad. ***Error encountered in asynchronous read: data suspect Failed, return code=0, elapsed=0.912000 The telescope seemed to work fine after this message, at least until later tonight. Now the shutter on the telescope appears to be stuck. Halfway through a set of five exposures on a standard star field (~12:00am), I noticed that the images suddenly looked funny. The stars appeared to be bleeding in one direction (up the screen) and the detector was shaded on the left side. It looked almost like it does if you forget to move the guider out of the center of the beam. Image sep27.104.fits was the first to show the problem. Arlin Crotts helped me to figure out it was the shutter, and the bleeding stars were because the detector was still exposing while reading out. I took several additional images (objects and biases) hoping it would fix itself, but no such luck. We tried the command shutter close and the computer said the shutter was closed, but the images still looked the same. We also tried the command dl to download the DSP again, and looked at the telescope to see if a wire had come loose around the shutter. We couldn't find a way to fix the problem. I have been taking images all night with biases immediately afterward to try and subtract out the smearing of the stars during the readout of the chip, but I'm not sure this will result in useful data. ------------------------------ Submitted on 2003 Sep 28 [4:59:00]
