MDM Trouble Report for 2005 Feb 19 Telescope: 2.4m Observer(s): Statler/Watanabe (Ohio Univ.) Instrument: Direct/Echelle Problem(s) Encountered: /data/pinatubo/visitor became inaccessible from chichon. This was resolved by stopping pinatubo, running fsck manually twice (fortunately we had the root password from when this problem occurred the previous Sunday). It was necessary to power down pinatubo and reboot again to get disks mounted on chichon. Did emergency shutdown about 8pm due to lightning in the area. Bringing everything back up was not quite straightforward. Pinatubo again had disk problems and it was again necessary to run fsck to fix up the file system, then reboot chichon to get the mounts right. Computers did not re-establish their link to the outside world. It was neceesary to cycle the power on the router to fix this. This was caused by a problem in the Lightning Shutdown Procedure. It is not enough to simply say to restart do everything in reverse order. We guess that one needs to FIRST re-plug-in the T1 line to the back of the router before turning on the main UPS breaker. No hours of observing lost; weather was bad anyway. ------------------------------ Submitted on 2005 Feb 20 [4:26:52]
