MDM Trouble Report for 2005 Feb 3 Telescope: 2.4m Observer(s): Matthias Dietrich (The OSU) Instrument: CCDs B&C spectrograph Problem(s) Encountered: During the exposure of Feige56 (at 3:30 LT) chichon crashed, both monitors went black. After a moment chichon started an automatic reboot sequence I guess. I selected the two monitor version. I logged in as 'visitor'. Next, I had to start xtcs3, xmis, and prospero. However, a prospero status window appeared, indicating that (i) no instrument configuration loaded (ii) DTS link: down In the prospero window I tried to restart prospero with pr> startup but this attempt failed with the following error messages: cannot open /tmp/ariel.out CommError: No ariel daemon present Since I don't know how to re-establish a connection with ariel, I looked to the prospero manual for guidance, particularly in Appendix B (Trouble Shooting). I checked whether WC and IC are still running and it appeared they did. The WC display indicated that the exposure of Feige56 was executed and on the IC monitor e.g., the filename and the exposure time were given. However, I frankly didn't feel competant to switch off a few computers and to restart them as it is suggested and described in detail on page 35 of the prospero manual. Furthermore, I also could only locate the WC desktop but not IC or ariel. I am sure that it might have been pretty easy to get prospero back. I tried for example pr> IC UARTININT but I got the error message prospero not connected to the data-taking system IC command unavailable execution error in prospero command command: IC UARTINIT Just in case it would be fine if the last frame md2.0109.fits could be recovered which might probably be stored somewhere. ------------------------------ Submitted on 2005 Feb 3 [5:37:03]
