MDM Trouble Report for 2007 Feb 22 Telescope: 2.4m Observer(s): Marshall (OSU) Instrument: CCDS Problem(s) Encountered: The CCDS acqcam was very far out of focus from the telescope focus. I haev to say this makes no sense to me, since the slit itself was in focus. I started the night by focusing the telescope by eye using the slitviewer, which I always do, and all of the exposure I took were donuts. Finally I did a focus frame, and the telescope focus was about 50 counts off from where it had been the previous night, and when the star was in focus in the spectrum, the star was almost a donut on the slitviewer. This makes using the slitviewer to focus impossible (obviously) but more importantly it is very difficult to use the slitviewer even to get the star down the slit. I did not have this problem on previous nights, so hopefully it won't happen again? Another problem I have had this week is that the dome encoders lose their pointing by up to 40 degrees during the night. It only happened 3 of the 5 nights I observed. K3B on agung crashed the computer when I started it up this morning. I used K3B on hiltner instead, which worked fine. As I mentioned in a previous report, the dome now moves painfully slow, sometimes taking up to 3 min to get to the target. This seems unacceptably slow to me. Perhaps some sort of compromise could be made between the two speeds? ------------------------------ Submitted on 2007 Feb 23 [9:32:49]
