MDM Trouble Report for 2007 Jul 16 Telescope: 2.4m Observer(s): John Thorstensen (Dartmouth) Instrument: modspec + echelle CCD Problem(s) Encountered: My first exposure after opening had no light, so I suspected the shutter didn't open. I wrote a little script to open and close the shutter every 3 sec for a few cycles, went into the dome, and sure enough, I couldn't hear the shutter. I cycled the power on the Uniblitz controller, and manually moved the shutter with the switch on that box -- I could hear it moving, so that was encouraging. Tried the script again and CCDCOM was indeed moving the shutter, so I proceeded and it worked for the rest of the night. This may have had something to do with the lightning shutdown (which went smoothly). Can't think of a fix except to add an end-to-end test suggestion to the lightning shutdown procedure. Another minor issue - when I restarted xmis after the shutdown, and hit INITIALIZE, the retrocam prism went to the OUT position and then proceeded to make quite a racket, louder than I can remember it being. I cured this by moving the prism IN -- the noise stopped immediately when I issued the command -- and then back OUT -- and the noise didnt't recur. I had down the shutdown with the retrocam prism in the OUT position. A completely different issue -- at one point during the night I hastily flushed the urinal, and the handle did not return to its central position. The thing ran for about half an hour before I noticed it -- ouch!! -- and some water seems to have leaked from the handle onto the floor. ------------------------------ Submitted on 2007 Jul 17 [4:37:35]
