MDM Trouble Report for 2007 Jul 22 Telescope: 2.4m Observer(s): John Thorstensen (Dartmouth) Instrument: modspec + echelle CCD Problem(s) Encountered: During the heavy rains right after dinner I was out in the dome filling the dewar, and I noticed a large number of leaks. The most problematic one is in the flaring around the dome top fan that is southwesternmost (with the dome parked); it drips right onto the telescope! When I opened a while later, I aimed the telescope into the far NW before opening the mirror, and a fair amount of water dribbled from the vicinity of the top ring. The mirror cover also had large wet spots in the SW quadrant, which I dried by climbing a ladder (very carefully, and accompanied) and using a rag on a stick. I opened the mirror cover after I was reasonably certain nothing would drip on the mirror, and inspection of the mirror showed no water spots. The cross-members of the dome shutter collect a lot of water, which proceeds to dribble out (through rivet holes?) when you open the dome. I stopped the dome shutter partway to let these drain. Also, during the heavy rain, the wall near the #2 louver (counting dentist-style from the NW) was weeping water; and quite a bit of water was dribbling through the gap between the dropout and the shutter, onto the plywood top of the room that houses the breakers, etc. ------------------------------ Submitted on 2007 Jul 23 [5:38:53]
