MDM Trouble Report for 2008 Sep 26 Telescope: 1.3m Observer(s): Atlee (OSU) Instrument: 4k Camera Problem(s) Encountered: McGraw began to be unresponsive when I asked it to list the detailed information about a file that had been written to /lhome/data/. A subsequent request for data taking in Prospero indicated that Caliban had become unresponsive. (Error message lost.) When attempting to disable the data-taking programs and re-start, the system froze completely. It stopped responding to ping requests from Hill, and I was forced to do a hard restart of the system using the reset button on the machine in the computer room. Upon reboot, running the Prospero startup script yielded: ***ERROR: The Caliban and IC disks are not synched Image storage will not work until this is done Make sure Caliban is up and running (restart Caliban or type >IC PING in Caliban window and try again Neither of the suggested courses of action yielded desired result, and error message recurred. Performed lightning shutdown to restart system from known state. This corrected the problem Also, please note that a number of files that should have been recorded as part of the focus test (14 files total) were not transferred from the IC to /lhome/data/. This suggests that the initial problem occurred during the recording process and not later. Upon coming back from the shutdown (which took the TCS) the telescope refused to slew in RA. Had to kill the TCS GUI and restart, which brought up its complaint about HA not homed. The TCS control apparently does not deal well with sending the focus home. Also, during one of the focus study sequences, the RA control motor began jerking rather than tracking smoothly. At the same time the control over Dec from the hand paddle failed completely. During this sequence, the telescope appeared to slowly drift to the north, i.e. the guide star drifted to the south during the sequence. This problem was ultimately resolved by slewing the telescope back to the zenith. ------------------------------ Submitted on 2008 Sep 27 [4:07:17]
