MDM Trouble Report for 2008 Sep 12 Telescope: 2.4m Observer(s): Stoll and Yee (OSU) Instrument: TIFKAM Problem(s) Encountered: The major problem occurred at around 10:33 UT. There began to be a significant drift in RA, as if the tracking was not quite keeping up, and the guiding was unable to compensate. The buttons on the hand paddle were not stuck, as has been known to happen; in fact, the telescope was not responding to motion commands from the hand paddle at all. TCS monitor read, Dec Encoders not responding . Problem was eventually resolved by returning to zenith, doing a partial shutdown, and restarting the TCS computer. (Things that had not worked included toggling tracking on and off and resetting the RA/Dec encoders.) Problems that did not have a negative impact on our ability to take data: -When initializing xims after a lightning shutdown something in the MIS made a continuous rattling noise. Reinitializing xmis solved the problem. -Had same IC synch problem as last night with an exposure that gets stuck in the writing process. Resolved with new IC-to-Caliban transfer disk error recovery procedure. Have encountered this twice in a row after lightning shutdown. Perhaps a symptom of order in which we brought things back up from shutdown? Followed order in Aug 25th, 2008 document. -Internet went down around 11 pm. We are unable to submit the observing and trouble reports. ------------------------------ Submitted on 2008 Sep 12 [4:57:04]
