MDM Trouble Report for 2009 Sep 5 Telescope: 2.4m Observer(s): Pellegrini, Oey (U. Michigan) Instrument: CCDS Problem(s) Encountered: When we rebooted from CCDS this time, we didn't go thru as many cycles of failing to start, but we still did not manage a straightforward startup. We did the following: boot IC to 'c' prompt, boot hiltner, logged into hiltner, hit 'c' on IC, started xtcs, xmis, ISIS, TCSagent, Caliban, Prospero. Failure to sync with Caliban, same error as last night. This time we followed the hand-written instructions on a page in the manual for this particular error: typed > IC PING . No luck. quit and reboot IC through 'c' prompt. Then prospero startup . This worked, which was solutin #2 on the Note. The internet was crippled since afternoon, and still is in that state. We were/are unable to check weather via internet, etc. We can access mountain websites like this one, but anything off mountain is basically impossible, especially anything with images. We had trouble with the guider. We used the formula of 270 - Rotator Angle, to start with. It seemed ok on the first object. However, on the second object, the guiding failed, and seemed to drive the star out of the box in the N-S direction. We tried changing the angle by 180 deg, and this seemed to work for at least 10 minutes. But then that started to fail too. Ultimately, we set the angle to the exact value of the rotator angle, at which point guiding was better than it had been at any other time in our run. ------------------------------ Submitted on 2009 Sep 6 [6:10:58]
