MDM Trouble Report for 2010 Dec 15 Telescope: 1.3m Observer(s): Shields, van Saders (Ohio University, OSU) Instrument: CCDS Problem(s) Encountered: Problems arose while attempting to move the dome manually during the night. To mitigate windshake, we raised the dropout shutter after sending the dome home with the TCS, and subsequently allowing the computer to take it back to follow the telescope. Later we attempted to lower the dropout by first putting the dome in manual mode with the switch in the dome (as advised by Bob), and rotating from the dome panel. The dome started to rotate as desired, then stopped responding to the dome switch and rotated back to following the telescope. At this point the dome was unresponsive to the manual switch even though the panel was set to manual mode. We finally turned off the telescope tracking, at which point the dome became responsive to the manual switch and we were able to rotate home and lower the dropout shutter. After returning the panel switch to auto mode, we attempted to put the dome back to centering mode with the TCS button which generated an error message socket not connected. After some investigation we found that the rslit process was not running, so we turned off the telescope control and restarted. We completed one further observation at the current telescope position and attempted to use jskycalc to slew to the next object, which failed with an error message (yellow) on the jskycalc panel. We subsequently restarted jskycalc and succeeded in slewing but were unable to find our next source and ended up going to the zenith to rezero the pointing from the TCS panel. Subsequent attempts to use jskycalc to slew the telescope failed with a red error message, even after restarting the program. For the remainder of the night we slewed the telescope from the telescope control panel. Summary: rotating dome from the panel in manual mode did not work as expected, telescope control failed, and upon restart we have been unable to get jskycalc to interact properly with the TCS. ------------------------------ Submitted on 2010 Dec 16 [6:57:13]
