MDM Trouble Report for 2017 Nov 04 Telescope: 2.4m Observer(s): Douglas, Nunez, Halpern (Columbia) Instrument: OSMOS Problem(s) Encountered: We ran into several issues tonight. First, we had guiding problems - the guider appeared to freeze after taking the first guide image (so in the guide tab, we selected Expose, hit start, then selected Track, and hit start. The guider would take a single new image, then stop updating). This happened twice. Both times, we tried the solution from the archive on Oct 16, but it didn't initially appear to have an effect until we hit Stop and Start another time or two. It's not clear whether it's actually the new settings or just the stopping/starting that made it start guiding again. Second, one of the mirror A/C ducts ripped. This may have happened when we were too close to zenith and the telescope rotated into a limit. (This is when we noticed it, at least.) We lost time to getting the telescope back out of limits, but it didn't seem like there was anything we could do about the duct. We didn't turn the A/C back on again at the end of the night. Finally, the telescope ran away again, this time when we were slewing to zenith to shut down. Again, we were observing at RA~22, and zenith was RA~01. The telescope ran away West when it should have been slewing East. Our best guess is that the TCS is glitching and trying to go all the way around the circle (decreasing in Dec) instead of realizing it needs to go East and cross 0 to get back to low RA. This time, we noticed before it hit the limit and hit stop on the TCS. We slewed by hand back to RA~0, and then sent it to zenith successfully. ------------------------------ Submitted on 2017 Nov 5 [3:31:29]
