20April Update: MDM Information Regarding Covid-19

Monday, April 20, 2020 1:38 AM

The month of April marches on, though sadly science at MDM remains in a holding pattern.  With no updates coming from KPNO in regards to timelines to ramp science operations back up, we must default to the stay-at-home orders put into place earlier this month by the AZ governor.  As understood, this will be in effect at least through the end of April.  After that, we will hopefully hear something about where things stand as the clear, dry skies of May move in.

MDM Observatory, as well as all of Kitt Peak National Observatory, remains closed for science operations.  Telescopes and systems remain in stasis, awaiting the go-ahead to return to science.  Meanwhile, the State of Arizona has issued stay-at-home orders for all non-essential services.  While the science we facilitate is certainly critidcal to the world of astronomy, it is not critical in the life-and-death scenario our nation currently faces.  In the meantime, still ay home.  Stay safe.  Do what you can to slow the spread of this virus.  We will see this from the other side eventually.

Please check back frequently as this may be updated or revised as necessary.  Thanks for your understanding and cooperation as we all work through the most appropriate way to navigate through these decisions.
